Team Feedback Canvas: A Tool for Team Alignment

You know that I am waving the flag of feedback and meaningful (aka honest) conversations. Yes, I do. 💁🏼‍♀️

And I have a little pre-Christmas present for you! 🎁

I've created a Team Feedback Canvas— a practical tool designed to help your team engage in open conversations about current feedback practices, individual preferences, and potential areas for improvement.

The canvas serves several purposes. It helps teams develop clear communication norms, create agreements about how you'll talk to each other, and make it easier to welcome new team members. It's a tool to get everyone on the same page about what effective feedback looks like for you.

Straightforward way how to use it:

  • During a team meeting or any other time that works for you pick a question from the Team Feedback Canvas;

  • Have everyone write their thoughts privately;

  • Collect and review the responses together;

  • Look for common themes, ask questions to clarify things, and work towards a shared understanding.

The key is to start with individual reflection. This means everyone writes down their thoughts before discussing them together. This approach prevents a few loud voices from dominating the conversation or influencing answers and gives everyone a chance to share their perspective.

Don’t forget to write down important take-aways and agreements, so you can hold each other accountable!

What makes this canvas special is that it's not a one-time thing. It's a living document that can change as your team grows and changes. By revisiting it regularly, you keep your communication fresh and aligned with what the team needs.

The most important thing is to approach the canvas with an open mind. It's about understanding each other, not pointing out what's wrong. This helps to build trust, improve communication and help everyone to do their best work, because when it’s not done well - you know someone will be there to help you!
